Electric heaters

I put this in last year. http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Natu.../dp/B000HEA7LQ
I got it for $350 plus $25 for a lp conversion kit from lowes. Works great runs of a regular thermostat so I can keep a consistant temp. I had a local gas company bring me a 120 gal propane tank and set it out side the garage. I ran about 12' of black iron pipe and was good to go. It cost $180 to fill the lp tank and I used 1.5 tanks last year keeping a 24'x28' garage at about 55 degrees.

I spend about $100/month in the winter for my gas and electric. One month I ran the electic heaters it was $250 for that month. Propane is definitely a second choice to natural gas. The reznor I bought came with both regulators and orifices for natural gas an rpropane. If you got a LP unit you could upgrade when natural gas came available.2013 Raptor

My dad had one of those in his 20x24 shop. It works OK if you don't have gas, but he didn't use it to maintain a temp. He only turned it on when he was going to work. You have to turn it on about 2 hours before your want to work and if it's less than 15 degress out it could only get his garage to about 45-50 running constantly. His garage had no ceiling sheet rock though. I imagine using it to maintain 50 degrees would be expensive.

Hmmmm, glad I ran across this topic. I have a 24x24 garage with 10' walls. Going to insulate it and sheet rock it, and had thought about buying a 5000 watt electric heater from Fleet farm since it is on sale for $220, but would not be opposed to also having a 100lbs propane tank outside the garage and running it into the garage for a heater, just not sure size/model would be a good choice?
ps
How much is it per gallon/lbs to fill a propane tank?
pss
I do not have a gas supply to the house, electric only.Last edited by billb; 10-07-2012, 04:20 PM.71 Nova, 454/th350, 2800 stall, 8.5 4.10 posi, kinda stock

with 10' ceilings i would recommend getting the 75k btu heater. i only have 8' ceilings in a well insulated 680 sq foot garage and my 45k btu heater runs quite a bit on cold days.Originally posted by tim View Post
Also you want a 100 gallon tank not a 100lb, theres a big difference. I believe it was around $2 a gal last time I had mine filled.

If you don't mind me asking, who do you use for propane? I assume with a 100 gallon tank that they need to deliver the propane? Not sure a propane truck could get to the back of my yard as my 1/2 ton barely can get through the gateOriginally posted by 9GUY9 View Postwith 10' ceilings i would recommend getting the 75k btu heater. i only have 8' ceilings in a well insulated 680 sq foot garage and my 45k btu heater runs quite a bit on cold days.

Maybe electric will be my only real choice......

I use Ferrelgas, I called the 3 or 4 places around Kato that rent tanks and they were either the cheapest on lp, or able to set it up the quickest. This is a 120gal tank. I was told its the largest they could do with out a city permit. The truck that fills it parks where the yukon and camper are and runs a hose to the tank.Originally posted by billb View PostIf you don't mind me asking, who do you use for propane? I like the fact that you can use a regular house hold thermostat with these heaters, I leave the garage at around 55 all the time. The exhaust is pretty easy to put in, you can go out the side or up and out the roof.
