    Sleep number beds - discuss

Worth the $? If you have one, what model?

They have a sale right now on some, considering a purchase...

    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Used to have a king and I hated it. It's an air mattress and it feels like it. You can also feel the dividers on the edges and in the center. You spend tons of time dicking with the loud ass inflator trying to find your "number" and the thought of finding that sweet spot just compels you to dick with it more. Conventional or tempur are the only way to go.

Its as comfy as you want it to be. You can get it with all the hospital bed settings(head and legs up in any configuration.) Has a cheap motel style massage setting.

Thing I absolutly hate about it is since you can set the 2 sides as different firmness, it has 2 air filled matresses or whatever and inbetween those is a hard piece that gives it the feeling of 2 matressespushed together and keeps people on there side of the bed because you sure as shit dont wanna sleep in the middle.

this. I had one and they suck for knees to the ears action. They have zero bounce, per their design. Hey Dan, you wear out the mattress I sold you already? That was probably about 5yrs ago eh?

if you really want a soft bed the sleep number turns into a hammock below a ceryain number. Go to a mattress store and find the mattress that is cut in half. Lay down and see what happens..... your body never seats into the springs as you will see so the spring marketing is a gimmick and this is coming from a person who worked for a bedding mfg. Unless you get a mattress with one inch of foam the only conforming to your body will be the foam. Buy the most conforatable bed you can find with the least amount of foam. More foam will result in body impressions (foam taking memory) and lumpyness over time which will result into being uncomfortable. Mfg's do not give comfort warrantys. Also plan on sweating for a while until you get used to to the mattress, because these newer foams reflect heat more than they absorb. It will take a week to a few months tp get used to it.

memory foam beds are another story. Ask the store sales rep why they change out the small samples so often. Once the petroleum evaporates the bed becomes crusty and will disintegrate. Mostly the edges though.

My vote is for a traditional plush top mattress. If you are over 325lbs you may want to go for a firm. Anything above that (plush or pillowtop)will be replaced a lot sooner than later.

Good luck hunting as there is a lot of BS in that industry from 60+ margins, to huge spiffs to the salesperson on beds usually over $1300.00.

Remember buy what you want, not what they reccomend.

Memory foam is a polyurethane. Does not dry out. The samples are thin and it looses density from people squishing it constantly.

Sleep number is not worth it. The wife and I went and tried one out and decided that they were garbage. We found we both liked softer beds, but like others stated under 40 it feels like a hammock. I am allergic to memory foam, found that out the hard way. I had to go to a doctor that specialized in allergens, and he said that many people are mild to severely allergic to the poly in the memory foam.

Anyways, we found a conventional mattress on sale at Slumberland... Could not be happier. We waited for a large sale there this past spring and saved 900 dollars on it.
I love the hate, gives me a new purpose.

Sealy posterpedic pillow top. We picked up a king a month ago. Best sleep and overall comfort ever.

my uncle has one, helped him move and its the flimsiest thing i ever seen. spend the money on a temperpedic. i have one and if your wanting something to help with a sore body there is nothing like laying down on that memory foam after a long day.

I have only had conventional mattresses but recently have been looking at replacing. Tempurpedic does not excite me for the heat issue and the fact that it completely absorbs any energy put into it. Sleep number just costs too much for what I would want (king/quiet). I'm not spending $3500 for a bed. Will replace with traditional mattress.

I bought a latex foam from the mattress factory about 5 years ago, still the most comfortable bed I've ever been in. I don't remember what we spent on it, but you can't put a price on years of good nights sleep.

Sleep number seems like a joke. Maybe if its for a guest bed, but why would you get an adjustable bed? Jack of all trades is master of none.
I'd get a nice pillowtop. When I went bed shopping I started at the most expensive and went down the line and ended up getting the best stearns and foster bed. For how much time you spend on a bed I wouldn't cheap out one bit.
I don't like tempurpedics much either.
