Long story short, I have not been to the dentist in about 5 years. I go to this place called Northwoods Dental in plymouth, its a hike but they always seemed to take care of me. Anyways. I finally get dental insurance where I am working and make an appointment. I go in there, they want to do a "root scaling and scraping" or a deep cleaning. With insurance they want to charge me about $420. I have no dental pain, no cavities, just need a good cleaning. I have talked to 5 people regarding this and they all look at me like im crazy, I felt totally screwed anyways. I paid about $120 out of pocket yesterday for them to go around and do a light scrape and work hard on about 3 teeth for 20 minutes... Is this normal at all? The bill was about $900 BEFORE insurance...
Dentists? I am getting hosed me thinks...

This is normal when you don't visit the dentist in 5 years, don't floss enough, and don't brush enough. If you want to save money, you can have this done at one of the local dental schools for about $50. It's not the most enjoyable experience, but it has to be done.

I would be inclined to agree, I need a bit more heavy duty cleaning, but my brother hasnt gone in almost 20 and he paid nothing out of pocket. Just doesnt seem right I guess...Originally posted by badcobra View PostThis is normal when you don't visit the dentist in 5 years, don't floss enough, and don't brush enough. I have always gone every 6 months for a cleaning, except once I waited a year. It never cost me even close to that much.
I just looked at the bill and it was about $150 for an evaluation and cleaning. I had to go back and get 4 cavities fixed and it was about $500 total with the cleaning. After insurance I only paid a little over $100.
Maybe the 5 years is the difference, I don't know.

It's all about what your insurance actually covers and it sounds like yours doesn't cover much of it. Like I said, call one of the local dental schools. They will do this very cheap and will save you hundreds of $$$$.Originally posted by Mustangmatt View PostI would be inclined to agree, I need a bit more heavy duty cleaning, but my brother hasnt gone in almost 20 and he paid nothing out of pocket. FML... I mean seriously its just a cleaning?! sigh... I dunno, she did seem a lot more thorough then last time, just everyone else seems like I am getting killed on it..Originally posted by Mrs. 2Lehner View PostThat work and price sounds about right Matt. Going to the dentist is not cheap. After having the baby my gums are all jacked up now. It goes along with the pregnancy. I get to have some work done this Thursday for about that price. Not looking forward to it one bit....

Fuck dental insurance. What a scam. I pay 125.00 every six months at my dentist. He’s old school. Not some douchey little fuck. If he can save your tooth without a crown/root canal/ etc, he will.
I have not had a cavity in years and when I did crack a tooth back in 02, 2 other dentists told me I needed a crown/root canal. I went to him and he said, meh, you might at some point, but let me break off a tiny bit of the leftover piece, and put a filling in there. See how that is. It’s a 50/50 shot but I’d rather do this and try to save your tooth rather than putting on a crown. So I did. Cost me 150.00 and saved my tooth.
Dental insurance is like vision insurance. Scam.
P.S. I do not have dental insurance or vision insurance.
