They say everything is bigger in Texas, and now it seems everything might be faster too. The House of Representatives in Texas has approved a new transportation bill, and it includes legislation that would allow the Texas Department of Transportation to raise speed limits to 85 miles per hour. The state's Senate is presently considering a similar measure.

The DOT cannot simply go out and slap up a fresh new set of 85-mph speed limit signs. Both engineering and traffic studies must be done before motorists are given a green light to those increased speeds. Don't feel too bad for those speed-restricted Texans, though. 85 mph wouldn't be much of a stretch for Texas, since the state already enjoys 520 miles of highway with an 80-mph speed limit.

I-10 in Texas is 80MPH. Drove it a few years back in the RV. People were doing at least 90plus!

I loved driving in TX. Even some of the two-lane country roads I drove on were 70 mph. The difference is the bigger shoulders and drivers that actually recognize a faster car behind them and move over to let them pass. Funny thing is, it didn't seem any less safe.

I understand this, but out west you can drive 100MPH for 50 miles and not see another car in the desert. Down south its 90MPH in rush hour.

Coming back from south padre we did 90 - 100 the whole way. Even through fort worth. Many cars were right along with us.

I got my first and only speeding ticket ever in OK on my way back to MN. Was on I-35 near Ponca City going 85. I was in OKC for 3 months and just wanted out of the state. He was in a Charger going opposite direction. Probably saw it was a Saleen and knew it could go crazy fast so he pulled me over. Little did he know....

He dropped it to 80mph but still cost $185 for 10mph over
