Though it technically starts Frebruary 3rd this year, the Chinese New Year travel season has begun. EVERYTHING shuts down for 5-10 days during the Spring Festival. Here's a glimpse of what I lived through last year and what I'm missing out on this year:

Home. Chinese New Year is like Super Christmas. It's like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and your birthday all rolled into one. For most people it's the only time of the year that they get to see their family. Everyone travels back to their hometown.Originally posted by SAMSONite View PostWhere are they migrating to?

Does it have the high suicide rates of Christmas and Thanksgiving too?Originally posted by fuzzy moonunit View PostHome. Chinese New Year is like Super Christmas. It's a bit of a nightmare, but it's truly awe-inspiring at the same time. I can't describe what it feels like to take part in this Chinese Hajj, but it's pretty awesome. I'm sure it's no longer fun after the first four or five times.Originally posted by Mullet Tuner View PostSounds like an absolute nightmare.
No idea. I think hell will freeze over before anyone releases accurate official suicide rates in China. My anecdotal experience would be to suggest that they don't have the same phenomenon. Adults in America all seem to exhibit a little bit of Christmas depression, but the Chinese adults didn't seem to have it (or I didn't notice it). To be fair, I was like some sort of euphoric kid getting to experience all these things in rural, rural form. Perhaps my giddiness blinded me to the pains of the holiday.Originally posted by Xtort View PostDoes it have the high suicide rates of Christmas and Thanksgiving too?

sounds dumb because some sides of the family are acually fun to go to.Originally posted by LTDpowerTCS auto ftlOriginally posted by FernanernieWhen someone calls you a racist, tell them: You try watching your peaceful, clean, safe town that you grew up in and loved turn into a dirty, crime- and drug-ridden shithole all at the hands of one segment of the population and then come tell me I don't have the right to loathe the perpetrators.

Who knows what the real data is. It's probably not ever an easy statistic to gather all the data on anywhere. But I've read a few stories here and there regarding high suicide rates in China.Originally posted by fuzzy moonunit View PostNo idea. Perhaps there are no suicides around the holidays because all the suicidal people already killed themselves? I remember not too long ago Apple caught some heat for mass suicides in its Chinese factories. The solution? Install nets around the building so they could no longer jump to their death.Originally posted by Xtort View PostWho knows what the real data is. Edit: Almost forgot another good one! There was a bridge in Guangzhou that people routinely climbed to jump to their deaths. It was a major traffic disturbance all the time. The solution? Cover the bottom two meters of the bridge scaffolding in crisco/butter so it was too slippery to climb.
