    Anyone patented anything? Lawyers?

I am looking into patenting a design/product. Does anyone have any experience with this? I obtained an info packet from inventhelp, but I don't think I want to go that route. Thanks.

Sure, I will help you just tell me what your invention is. Just kidding, I know you can go online to the patent office and see if it has been patented already. That’s all I got.

Its a long process (3-4 yrs until it makes it through the USPTO) and kind of expensive, probably in the ball park of 10-30k. Then after that its like 10k/yr to maintain the patent. Not to mention the lawyer fees if someone infringes on it. With how easy it is to get around patents, it would have to have a big market impact to really make it worth while.

A guy at work has been in the process for some time now. He is having a lawyer handle a lot of it for him. It's been a long process and sounds quite spendy, but I haven't asked him exact numbers.

Nolo press used to put out a book that was pretty informative. Even if you don't go about it yourself, the info helps to make sure that your lawyer is on the level. one of the things that most people don't know is that you want the patent to stay in process as long as possible. Once it's approved it become public information. You also need to apply for patents in all of the different countries you want to protect your invention. I think there was other issues like taking careful notes, not using other peoples shop/place of business/place of work, to work on an invention etc. It's been a while since I read anything on it so I may not recall everything about it either. lol

This might be it, like I said it's been over ten years since I looked into anything. >Link

I know a guy who has a patent in his name. I was just asking him about it this past Friday. He said it has been a major pain in the ass since the patent was issued. He has spent countless hours in Federal Court over the last 5 years and has received ZERO compensation for his time. His patent is for a product that he designed while working for a company that he no longer works for. The patent is in HIS name, not the former company. Any time there is a court case involving his product, he gets subpoenaed to testify, or at least called in to give a deposition. The last thing he told me was..... "most people who have gone through the patent process will tell you it's not worth it!"

From the research I have done, Get your idea to market 1st and make $ Do not worry about the patent. The reason for this, A big company will just copy your idea and bury you in legal costs. I read a good article on it, cant remember it now of course. Also NOLO puts out some good books.

I have a few patents (I should say I’m listed as sole inventor, I do not own the rights), all I can say is good luck, to have a bullet proof patent written up it will cost you an arm and a leg, and even if you get a great patent attorney and they do a great job it's still going to cost you mucho coin to pursue anyone who you think is infringing on your claim. For Joe Blow I feel it's best to just get the product off the ground first, if it looks like it's going to make it then spend the money to have the patents illustrated and wrote up, doing that before hand is pretty much a waste of money and if you do a provisional patent the clock starts ticking from the day you send it in. There is an Inventors Network that has meetings in the TC area, if you really want to know more about the process you may want to attend a meeting or two with them.

P.S. if you are for real and want a prototype made let me know, I can beat anyone’s price.
