Premium is only required in the 350Z.
The Altima/Maxima and any other car with that engine have low enough compression to run 87 octane. The horsepower numbers were calculated with 92 octane, so you will notice a sticker on the fuel door that says "Premium fuel RECCOMENDED for maximum performance". The ECU will detect the lower octane and adjust ignition and valve timing accordinly. You might lose 5 or 10 horsepower, but I notice no real difference in my Maxima.
The door on the 350Z says "Premium fuel REQUIRED"
Running 87 octane on that engine will not do any harm to the motor....I really wish consumer reports would stop saying "premium fuel required" in the negative's section of the V6 Altima and Maximas.....I guess Nissan doesn't buy enough ads from them.

Casey at HTM also told me that he thinks because we have so much ethanol in the fuel in our area, it acts like a little higher octane than in other parts of the country.

I understand you have a religion called LS motors and you have faith that the LS motors break the laws of physics and work better and cost less than anything else ever built. Plus they never wear out.
I disagree.
