They want to keep the number of nurses they have and the benefits they feel they are entitled too.

Patient/Nurse ratio going up? It's more likely then you think

Well that's what happens in every job if you let go employees or business jumps. To manage a business (and yes, hospitals are a business), it's all about P&L. I don't claim to have a business degree, but I know one of the best ways to control costs is staffing. You don't need 3 "Bennys" working the fry station during a typical slow period, so you send 2 home (or not have them in the first place). If that one "Benny" has to bust ass because it gets busy (good luck with that), you pull staff from other areas. So you think that a waitress who has to work harder because of staffing cuts, or 20 drunk TCS'ers coming into their restaurant can now whine? Ohh wait, non-union.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not comparing a burger flipper and a nurse, but the labor formula still applies. Now to stir the pot a bit more, every nurse that I've spoken to at length and has been in nursing for a while, knows that the work suck, hours suck, and it's busy. Yet, every time they know, that if it does get busy, there is always someone that is on call, and can come in if need be. Not to mention that whenever I've been in a hospital visiting said nurses, or patients for that matter, I notice that they bust ass just enough to look busy, but inevitably there is always plenty of time to gossip about so-n-so's new baby, or last nights' Shit TV show. Patient/Nurse ratio, bleh, more like "keep out co-workers on the clock too so I don't get too lonely"

        My 2 cents
Dear Government, eventually the people with money will tell you to fuck off, and stop paying for those that don't work

i need to find that article that reviewed the varience reports regarding patient injuries and/or death related to staffing issues for all of minnesota, iirc the only 2 cases that were directly related to staffing were at a hospital in bemidji. i realize that is hearsay but i will find the article when i get back to work monday.

The biggest complaint I keep hearing is the patient to nurse ratio, yet I have yet to hear a solution offered from the nurses. They must have suggestions. I'd like to hear them.

Since money is not the issue and patient care is there only concern I suggest they all take 10% pay cuts. Then for every 10 nurses currenty employed they can hire one additional nurse. Patient/nurses ratio goes down.

Since 10% cuts are normal these days I don't see how they could be that unhappy about it. Besides the patients would be better off and that's the most important issue

edit: From what I can find their contract expired may 31st. Can the hospital still be held for breach of contract on an expired contract?
The contract is extended until a new contract is reached. The contract did expire, but is extended until a new one is reached. That is the norm for contracted employees.

I dont see any rationalization in this thread at all. This is all the same union/antiunion banter. Chad, you might as well stop, the only ones listening are the ones with an open mind, not the anti-union guys that are crabbing at you.

                        Bill,

This is uber common in large business. when a business gets very large like say a hospital, the employees absolutely don't give a fuck about the business itself or especially the chief. In fact I've picked up that they actually despise the leader and the name on their paychecks.

Kind of like Walmart. Do you think any of the mid to low level employees give 2 shits about walmarts bottom dollar. They hate walmart.

Same thing could be said about 3M or other local big business. Only reason anybody ever does care is if their is profit sharing. lol

I'm not arguing with you here tho. I agree the nurses and their husbands don't understand the business model as they are nurses. In a down-time in the economy people are gonna lose benefits, take pay cuts and lose jobs. Unions just cause shit like this to happen. I'm sure the hospital isn't pulling in as much money as it used too.

I don't think so and more people are quitting now to change jobs then being laid off.

O I'm aware of it, I just think people need to fucking grow up. My Mom has worked for 3M for 35 years and I know for a fact she LOVES when they do good, granted most of this is because she has a shit ton of money invested in the company but that’s fine and IMHO that’s the way it should be. These stupid union members would be much better off dissolving and coming back as individuals for an offer to obtain some sort of profit sharing (yes I’m aware many of these are non-profits and this would be possible without a restructure), then they would be vested in the machine running efficiently. Instead they invest in their unions so they can attempt to obtain the same finical gain but without the hard work, sacrifice and any sort of responsibility pertaining to company profits.

I LOVE working for a smaller company, everyone wants to kick ass day after day, people go out of their way to come up with cost saving measurers (and when you do it’s very much appreciated) When we bid a project for X amount of hours and finish early it’s great, on to the next thing knowing full well you just made the company bank and that bonus next December will be just a little bit bigger.
