I am surprised how many people on here are anti-homeowner. With the interest rates and number of cheap houses on the market there is no reason to rent if your job is stable. You guys sound lazy as fuck complaining about shoveling or mowing grass.

As long as a person understands the costs, and budgets for those costs, there are not many downsides to owning a home in my opinion.

Agreed. Especially if you don't want/need a big expensive place. Mine was built in 71, is cheap to live in, is pretty much all updated, and my mortgage is less than most people pay for an apartment.

I have had to replace most of my appliances since moving in my condo since 2006. The only thing left is the washing machine and ice box. That right fuckers, I said Ice Box. I'm bringing that back. Along with Davenport. And Trousers.

i don't mind maintenance such as cutting grass, relocating snow, yard projects, dumb seasonal things.
i don't like water in my basement, and furnace stop working.
i do like seeing horses, golf course, and a state trail all from my deck. there are goods and bads but have alot of money saved up, or buy a newer house that does not need alot of upkeep.

Nick made some very solid points. Having a house isn't all it's cracked up to be. Especially now. Houses aren't worth shit and people like me that bought one 3 years ago are upside down on it. Yes, it'll come around, but for the time being it kinda blows. Having to fix shit sucks. Having to snowblow/shovel sucks. Ice dams suck.

I bought a house this year. Granted it was a foreclosure and it is really old, but its a ton of work and can be burdensome. I used to go away on weekends all the time carefree, now I worry that the furnace and sump pump keeps running, etc.
Plus all the extra heating costs and the tons of money in maintenance and repair, I've spent a shit ton on the house, and if I weren't handy and stayed on top of things, shit would be a disaster. It's not all its cracked up to be, but with that said I'd still never go back to renting and I have a lot of things I like about my estate.

i have been renting, and pissing my money down the drain.... 1000 bucks a month for a small ass townhouse. You think that is smart?

I bought my house at the height of the boom, I'd imagine I have pissed away a shit ton of money with all the interest paid and the depreciation since I bought it. Really pisses me off when you think you're making a good financial decision to buy a house but as of right now I owe a lot more than its worth.

With that said, if you are going to buy a house I think now is the time to do it since everything is in the shitter.

With regards to home ownership, I enjoy doing the maintenance stuff i.e. mowing, snow removal, fall clean up and all that stuff. Thats relaxing to me.

If houses are done depreciating and the house is in good shape, and the buyer is staying put for a while, a house is still a good call. At least if you sold it for what you paid, you get some of your money back. You never get that renting.

Over time, people's incomes flatten out. Rent always goes up.

That and I cant stand moving.
