tranny issues. not wanting to shift when cold

so i started driving my truck and its acting pretty weird. it doesn't want to shift into any gears on its own when its cold. leaving me the choice of 1st and 2nd until warm which consists of about a couple miles of driving. then when it does shift it locks up really firm in drive and overdrive. locks up as in when i let off the gas the driveline chugs and when i slow down it won't shift out of gear it starts to shudder then finally shifts out. what could cause this? 89 FORD RANGER 4X4 so its the AL4D or whatever they call it. it was rebuilt 2 years ago has about 20k on it and the fluid is still red does not smell burnt help

I had the same issue with a C4 in my race car, I could manually shift in first and second, but once I went up to drive, it shifted back down to first, and wouldn't go through the gears automatically. How did if fix it? I tried replacing the vacuum modulator and the throttle valve, I also cleaned out the governor weights so they could move freely. That didn't fix it.

I decided if I was going to take that transmission out, it was going to be in a thousand little pieces, so I revved that bitch up to six grand, dropped her into first, got going up to six grand in first, dropped it into second, got going up to six grand and then dropped her into drive. Shifted fine. Of course you can't let up on the gas while doing this.

I got about 5 laps on the track out of that trans before the clutches and bands were toast.

I have the same problem with my 94 ranger with the a4ld, my vac modulator was bad, I replaced it and it seemed better at the time, but once it got cold again, it acted up again. I gave up, I hate autos

me too. this is my third tranny in this truck in 5 years. this one is built though so i don't get it.

sounds like a tq lock up soliniod. or a valve body problem.

01darkblueTA, have you checked out explorerforum.com? They have some good tranny info. The first thing to check is the vac modulator. Pull the vacuum line to it and see if there is an tranny fluid in the lines. If there is, the modulator needs to be replaced. The other thing I read about is band adjustment or something.
