Did you change pistons? Do you know your cyl wall to skirt clearance? Some piston skirt profiles can be very loud especially if the clearance is on the high side of spec. which it should be if you plan on running any real boost.
You also said the rods are new, what brand rods and were they checked to make sure that the big end is round and also not tapered front to back as some rods can be off by quite a bit out of the box.
One more thing about possible piston noise, the pin bore clearance may be too tight causing a more aggressive piston rock at tdc and bdc.
nothing like that I was very careful not to put anything down carb! I might think it valve clearance might be hitting the piston going to the shop to work on it to see what I come up with
I had this happen once. Made my engine sound like a diesel. If you have access to a scope, look through the spark plug holes, the valves will have most likely already made some indentations in your pistons.
Well all of the work and the car is back up and runnng. Come to find out in was the altanator pulley that was not flat against the balancer so all the noise we were hearing was coming from there.
Still have to work on a couple of things to get the car to run right Timeing, jet the carb, re-set the valve lash Ect. At least the motor for all I know is ok and should be able to drive it around later today but for sure next weekend.
Ok now I can clam down
I want to say thanks to all the people that put some light on what the problem might have been.
