Yeah commenting about Tom Hanks' contributions to WWII vets in a thread about a WWII mini series executive produced by Tom Hanks is pretty off topic.

I guess you could get upset by him saying we hate other groups because they're different but that would be satirically trolling the TCStangs forums. If you plan on serious posting your dislike for his statements here you are a massive retard.

Ok, so I may have overstated it a bit. And yes Hanks has done a lot on behalf of vets, that is why his comments are disturbing.

I’m surprised you felt the need to scale back your hyperbole and restate your point to titanium of all people.

I saw one interview with old vet who thought the war would be over quick because everyone in his platoon thought the Japs couldn't shoots straight because there eyes were slant.

From what I know, it was a war based on race.

I believe it was a tad more complicated than that.

Looks like Hanks tried to make a good short sound byte but instead should have bit his tongue. That being said, I certainly wouldn't condemn him or call his statement "anti-American."

On that topic, when did any criticism become anti-American? If I look back and admit I made a mistake, does that make me anti-John? Whether the United States actually did make a mistake is irrelevant; I think it's a very American thing to do to voice an opinion, intelligent or otherwise.

Yes it's a bit more complicated, but I didn't want to take it too far off topic either.

It's not necessarily the criticism itself, but to point out the fault of one side without taking note of the other would be considered unfair to say the least. Weighing the difference of racism and internment camps to forced labor, torture and elimination of other groups, I think the later would be more prevalent to bring up. I kind of get the impression that Pearl Harbor set the mood at the time as well. I do think that what Tom says is published and also carries a lot of influence so there's more to it than simply stating an opinion. Also, many people today would take things on his word only. Just seems irresponsible to me and it's not his place to comment/apologize for people of that time period I guess.

A relative of mine (grandparents cousin) fought in Asia during WWII. My grandpa told me some horrific stories of the Japanese behavior. One in particular that comes to mind is tying Allied POWs to trees, removing limbs, eating the severed limbs, and packing the wrapped "stubs" with salt to keep them alive/preserved. He claimed this took place on remote Phillipine islands.

So because people listen to him he has to modify what he says or remain silent? He is required to give a full and accurate account of WWII history every time he opens his mouth on the subject? That seems not only unfair but downright unrealistic.

In my personal opinion (read: just me, not substantiated by anything) I believe a person has a responsibility to change the world for the better according to his abilities. I think it's good when Sean Penn makes public statements denouncing the war in Iraq, I ALSO think it's good when Chuck Norris makes statements supporting the war in Iraq. I think both sides are just doing what they think will improve our country.

That said, I also believe mistakes are as serious as their consequences. If a celebrity's statement somehow has a substantial deleterious effect then he or she is at fault for the consequences, not for the action of voicing his or her opinion.

In other words, Tom Hanks said something kind of stupid, it didn't make a big difference, so who cares?

There was no proof that it was the Japanese that did it.
