    Spark Plug Repair

I do not post much and but do lurk around quite a bit.

Anyways, my 99 Cobra has shot a plug and I was wondering if there is a recommend shop in Elk River that would be able to correctly repair the plug with timesert of heli coli. I was able to reinsert a spark plug, but I am not quite sure if it is really safe.

However, I'd love to learn how to do it and if anyone is willing to help me out, I'd provide subsistence.

Let me know what people recommend or if they are willing to help out!

    Thanks - Ryan

Might want to change the head, I dont see it being safe even after a coil on a DOHC. The next time it fails could be worse.

With the added bonus that there isnt much room on those heads for a bigger hole, you also going to get some shavings in the chamber.

I vote to take it off, but someone here will disagree with me, just my $0.02

Edit, Did it back out (not tight, spun out) or blow out (no treads left)?

there is a head shop in rogers that specializes in ford heads, seems that was a common issue on the 5.4 too, can do it with the head still installed

Didn't realize DOHC cars had this issue. Not to mention, you were able to thread one back in?

I disagree. Heli-Coil repairs hold up fine done right and you can save a lot of time and money by not pulling the head. I can't recommend a good local shop but most should be able to handle this no problem. Replace all your other plugs at the same time and use plenty of anti-seize.

bring it in down to superior ford we put a full insert in with a locking pin so it will not turn out or loosen up. it is the way your car would be repaired per ford warranty. if you bring it down ask for rick to do the repair,
it's almost allstock! except the wheels.

This problem can be fixed with out removing the head.

If the plug threaded in and tightened up i wouldn't worry about it. Check the other plugs too.

I have to do this myself this spring. You always try to tackle it yourself. Here's the kit on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Ford-Triton-...item439d21f404 It has instructions on that one.

This one has a video on the basics of what is being done: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TIME-...motiveQ5fTools It looks perfectly reasonable to keep the head on, you just have to make sure to get all the shavings out.

thx for the responses...i'll post pics of the plug when I get home from work. It's just odd that I was able to get a new plug in there, but I'll give a few of the places mentioned a call and go from there.

here some pictures of the plug:

just mad at myself as i told myself to check my plugs and just forgot to do it. i sort of remember last year that this plug didn't seem like it went in all that well, but it was tight and i went with it.

Well that doesn't look too bad! I would just run a plug re-threader/thread chaser through the hole to clean up the threads (available at almost any auto parts store) and toss in a new plug! Looks like it was loose. Torque to spec, worst thing that can happen is you pull/blow all the threads and need to have it repaired.
