14+V at battery when running, why is AMP light on?

A few weeks back, my AMP light came on in my 89 stang and I finally got around to looking into it. The light came on when I was in Bloomington and I drove it all the way home(~25 miles) without any issues(even running AC).

I have a 130 amp alternator in the car(was used when I put it in). I also have electric cooling fans(Ramcharger).

When I started the car today and turned the cooling fans on high, the A/C with fan on high and highbeams on, the voltage at the battery was just over 14V. With all accessories off, it was ~14.5v, still not excessive(right?). With the car off and battery still hooked up as usual, voltage is 12.6v. Gauge on the dash is right in the middle with or without all the accessories on.

What would cause the AMP light to be on, yet the battery voltage is in the normal range?

EDIT: SOLVED...maybe. I looked under the car and the small gray plug looked to be mostly out of it's socket. I haven't started the car, but I'm guessing that was it.

Resistor went bad on the alt.

Need new alternator or can I replace the resistor?

My understanding is that anything under 14.8 is still OK. When it exceeds 14.8, then it’s excessive.

Also, this testing was done just after I started the car. I would think the alternator puts out more power after initial start up to bring the battery to full charge. Is that true?

You got it right 14.5=ok when powering accy. To charge batt
Go to ohms law low amps=high resistance
          nitrous fixes everything!!!!!!!

            I disagree.

Your alt should produce 13.6-13.8 volts assuming that it is properly grounded and the battery sense wire to the reg is in good condition. 14+ is too high.

13.5 to 15.5 is what is considered acceptable. You may just have a faulty dummy light. Take it to a nearby advanced auto. They'll test the alternator for free

I did some more searching on corral and it's possible that the single gray plug(white wire?) has a bad connection or came off. Thinking about it, I think the light came on after a hard 1-2 shift, so that wire may have popped off. I'll see if I can look into it when I get home.

i bet it charges at 13.5 now and not 14.5 the absolute most an alternator that is working properly with a good battery is 14.1
